The Photography in Facing DeathMaggie Sale is a brilliant photographer and wonderful friend. Her nature photography in Facing Death: A Companion in Words and Images are their own inspiration and many The images are such important part of what this book has to offer. Very often, those in their final weeks and months of life are limited in their access to natural surroundings, due to treatment needs. This book revives that connection and provides a reliable source of beauty in a context that may become increasingly isolating and even bland. I hope many readers will find that the images and accompanying messages dialogue with one another, interpreting each other. Maggie and I spent a great deal of time together deliberately matching photos to text and making sure that we represented a variety of natural scenes, incorporating a range of regional backdrops. We did this to make it possible for many readers to find visual points of connection in the book. Ocean tides, prairie grasses, sunrises, sunsets, mountains, fall leaves, spring blossoms, snow-covered woodlands: it is hoped that these images will evoke memories, affirm the continuity of life and bring pleasure as often as they are viewed.
